Matthew 5

27 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.'

28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

31 "Furthermore it has been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'

32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

33 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'

34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne;

35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.

37 But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

38 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'

39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.

41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'

44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,

45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?

48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Jesus addresses moral issues that touch all of our lives…fasten your seatbelts today we see that:

Jesus deals with moral issues of Lust, Divorce, Swearing & Revenge

Jesus deals with moral issue of Lust

27 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.'

28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

The first issue is Jesus addressed deals with something that happens in our thoughts and most importantly in our hearts, this issue is lust.

Lust is defined as: an intense, eager, uncontrolled desire

Solomon spoke a lot about a lot of subjects. 1 Kings 4:32 He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five.

Listen to the connection he made between lust and the heart:

Proverbs 6:25 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids.

The Apostle Paul also mentioned that connection between lust and the heart.

Romans 1:24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves…

Romans 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

Romans 13:13-14 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust , not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Lust can really hinder us.

Galatians 5:16-17 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

1 Timothy 6:9-10 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

The connection between church problems and lust cannot be denied!

James 4:1-3 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

Lust wars against your soul!

1 Peter 2:11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,

Jesus deals with moral issue of Divorce

31 "Furthermore it has been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'

32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

Commitment keeps you together through times that are not fun! If you are married, you need to be committed to your marriage.

If you are married to an unbeliever, there are specific instructions for you:

1 Corinthians 7:12-15 "If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her.  And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him.  For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.  But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases.

If you are both believers, WORK IT OUT!

1 Corinthians 7:10-11  Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband.  But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

Guard against hardening your heart toward your spouse:

Matthew 19:3-9  The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?"  And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?  So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."  They said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?"  He said to them, "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

Just remember how God feels about divorce:

Malachi 2:16 "For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, for it covers one's garment with violence," Says the LORD of hosts. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously."

Notice when God speaks about His hatred for divorce, he refers to not dealing “treacherously.” That is because of the word of commitment you have given.

Jesus deals with moral issue of Swearing

Let me first remind you that there is a difference between swearing and cussing! We are not dealing with using bad language, but with swearing.

33 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'

34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne;

God has a real love for truth, that is why Jesus described himself as "the way the truth and the life" and that is why He described the Holy Spirit as "the Spirit of truth."

We have a responsibility to speak the truth:

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another.

Don't just speak the truth, speak it the right way:

Ephesians 4:15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ—

James 5:12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes" be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment.

Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”

Leviticus 19:12 “And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.”

Numbers 30:2 If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Deuteronomy 23:21-23 “When you make a vow to the LORD your God, you shall not delay to pay it; for the LORD your God will surely require it of you, and it would be sin to you. But if you abstain from vowing, it shall not be sin to you. That which has gone from your lips you shall keep and perform, for you voluntarily vowed to the LORD your God what you have promised with your mouth.”

Jesus deals with moral issue of Revenge

Revenge is always an uncontrolled repayment.

Leviticus 19:17-18 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart.

·       That is such an important command because once you allow hate into your heart it is so difficult to get out…

·       1 John 2:9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now.

·       Proverbs 26:24 He who hates, disguises it with his lips, And lays up deceit within himself

·       Hebrews 12:14-15 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

·       The infection that is caused by allowing that in your heart will infect many others.

·       Matthew 18:35 “So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.”

·       Forgiveness has to come “from the heart.”

Leviticus 19:17-18 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

·       This sounds like what we studied recently about confronting someone who has sinned against you.

·        Matthew 18:15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.”

·       The important thing is that we do not allow the wrong actions of someone else to cause us to sin.

Leviticus 19:17-18 “You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.”

No taking vengeance

·       The reason for that you cannot take vengeance is because we cannot judge what is fair repayment because we are emotionally involved in the situation. We tend to give them much more than they deserve, and even that is not enough.

·       1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

No bearing grudges

·       Listen to the meaning of the Hebrew word used here:

·       grudge “to guard and cherish anger”

·       Be careful that you don’t take the attitude, “I am mad and I am never going to forget how made I feel right now.”

Love others like you love yourself

·       You are not told to simply tolerate others, but to love them.

·       This is the distinguishing mark of a believer:

·        John 13:35 “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

If we love the way Jesus taught us, it will eliminate us becoming revengeful, bitter, hateful people. Jesus gave us the example:

1 Peter 2

21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

22 "Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth";

23 who, when He was reviled , did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;

Not taking revenge does not mean that they are getting away Scott-free, but that you are allowing God to take care of it.
